MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - People seeking clarity in the confusing fight to surrender the Memphis City Schools charter spent Saturday morning hearing arguments for and against the vote to transfer the city school district to Shelby County Schools.
LeMoyne Owen College served as the backdrop for Alpha Phi Alpha's Memphis City Schools charter surrender forum.
Panelists voiced the pros and cons of the subsequent merger of Memphis and Shelby County Schools.
"If, in fact, the charter surrender does go forward, the funding provided by the City of Memphis, which is $78,220,000, that will go away," said Shelby County Schools Board President David Pickler.
"When we talk about money from our property taxes, that's distributed equally to every child regardless of what school system he or she is enrolled in," sand Memphis City School Board member Martavius Jones. "So we have the free and reduced lunch for the Memphis population, that's not going to change."
Others questioned if the charter surrender would create chaos.
"I'm concerned about what would the surrendering of the charter or establishing a special school district do," said SCLC President Dr. Dwight Montgomery, "dealing with the poor economic conditions of the 105,000 children in the urban areas."
"If you want to keep it like it is where we're fighting and fussing and the children are hurting, keep doing what you're doing and you'll get what you're getting," said Memphis NAACP President Dr. Warner Dickerson. "If you want to do what's right and be born again, vote yes to surrender."
The Memphis City School Board is considering a compromise and it is unclear if the charter surrender vote will actually happen.
