MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis City School Board members voted No to a compromise from Shelby County Schools regarding the charter surrender Tuesday.

The vote came down late Tuesday night after a more than four-hour meeting.

The vote on the Shelby County School Board compromise was expected to pass or fail by a narrow margin, but that was not the case.  The Memphis City School Board handily rejected it with a 7-2 vote.

Only school board members Kenneth Whalum and Freda Williams voted in favor of the compromise.

Most Memphis City School board members said the compromise did not seem like much of a compromise to them.  A sticking point for the board was the county school's compromise would give county voters a say in whether to consolidate.

Memphis City Schools Attorney Dorsey Hopson said now is the time to negotiate and revise the county school's proposal.
