MEMPHIS, TN -
It seems almost inevitable now that some sort of change will be coming to the structure of the Memphis City and Shelby County School systems, and that change could be fairly major.
Now change is not necessarily good or bad, but that's not what we're going to hear over the next few weeks. We'll get more overheated rhetoric about the terrible things that will result from consolidation. And on the other side, we'll hear from the dreamers who think consolidation will automatically improve education and lower taxes.
Neither extreme is likely to represent the reality of our future. We need to understand we're not going to all see this the same way. A childless taxpayer in the city will have one idea; the parents of school age children in the county will be thinking differently.
To facilitate the discussion, Action News 5 and the Memphis Rotary Club are conducting a debate and town hall meeting next Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. here on WMC-TV 5.
If we do this right as a community, we may end up with better educated young people and/or lower taxes. If we mess it up, we could get the worst of both.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
