Andy's Rest. Scorecard: Makeda's "hat trick"

MEMPHIS (WMC-TV) - On the bottom shelf of the display case, there's a cookie cake in the shape of a Bible.

The 'pages' fan open to Philippians 4:13:  "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

The Hill family's faith has not only strengthened them through tragedy, but it's also helped their Makeda's Homemade Butter Cookies, 2370 Airways Blvd., achieve the first "hat trick" on the Scorecard:  a Big Tip, a Top 5 and now the High Score of the Week with a 99 on its Jan. 18 health inspection.

"We just try to do our best, Andy," said Makeda's co-owner Maurice Hill.

Modest, Maurice is. Always modest.

Even when giving credit for the store's spit-shined 99.

"I have to tell the truth -- my mother," he said. "She's my number one employee."

"I clean it up, and told them not to do it anymore," said Maurice's mom Teresa Hill. "That's my job. I have to do my job!"

The Hills opened the Airways location in 1999. The name's inspired by their 6-year-old niece Makeda's struggle with leukemia. She died from the disease in 1997.

Since that time, they've opened three more locations, closed two of them -- the typical ups-and-downs in a bleak economy.

But Makeda's addictive butter cookies, consistent service and Teresa's cleaning standards are why Scorecard viewers nominated the shop as our Big Tip last March (click here for that Scorecard report:  http://www.wmctv.com/Global/story.asp?S=12235632).

A month later, Scorecard viewers placed Makeda's among the Top 5 Desserts in the Mid-South (click here for that Scorecard report:  http://www.wmctv.com/Global/story.asp?S=12397061).

"They have some of the best cookies I have ever tasted," said Candice Booker of Southaven, MS, who clearly doesn't mind driving north for a half-dozen box. "I mean, if you look around, you can see how nice it is, and for you to be able to sit down and eat those cookies with the cold milk they provide, they're amazing!"
