OXFORD, MS (WMC-TV) - Dozens of animals in Oxford have a new place to call home now that a new shelter has opened up.

Workers at the Oxford Humane Society have spent the last three days moving 80 animals into their new shelter.

"From Thursday on it's just been 10 to 15 hours, eating Snickers bars and whatever people drop off for us," Executive Director Sarah Turcotte said. "We just tried to get all of our animals in one rush."

Just 21 minutes after the grand opening Tuesday, these two puppies were surrendered to the shelter.

"First two new arrivals and we've taken in, since yesterday, already 10 animals," Turcotte said.

The 4,000 square foot facility gives the shelter a comfortable capacity of nearly 150 animals, a big increase from previous facility's 60 animal comfortable capacity...

"In the summer we would operate at 100 to 150," Turcotte said. "Our shelter there was just not capable of handling that many animals."

Turcotte believes the animals will now be healthier and happier.

'As you can see, they're all happy on their nice, new concrete pad and with new toys and new blankets," she said.

But if the animals get sick, Turcotte said, there is a separate medical facility.

"We can immediately take them and quarantine them from the rest of our general population. We're trying to prevent cross contamination," she said.
