MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - Bardog is "Top Dog" in chili.

L'Ecole Culinaire culinary school Chefs Luahn Thomas, Jerri Myers and Kim Gauger  ( selected Bardog Tavern, 73 Monroe Ave., as the Memphis restaurant with the best chili out of five finalists chosen by our Scorecard viewers and Facebook fans.

Our judges awarded Chef Demitrie Phillips's rich, dark recipe with ground beef, crushed tomatoes, onion and garlic for its flavor, consistency and presentation.

"Remember, you guys always eat with your eyes first," said Gauger. "So the presentation has a lot to do with the food, and their presentation was spectacular."

Garnished with tortilla chips, diced onions and chilled sour cream that counters the chili's subtle heat, Bardog Tavern's chili is the perfect appetizer or complement to an ice cold beer.

Bardog Tavern ( is a top performer on the Scorecard: a former High Score of the Week, Chef of the Week (Phillips), Server of the Week (Jean Pruett) and now Best Chili.

"It is a great honor," said Phillips.

"It's all about Demitrie and the staff that we have here," said Bardog Tavern's owner Aldo Dean. "This is fantastic!"

Please try the fantastic chili dishes of our four runners-up, too:

* BUTTS SWEET SHOP, 3174 THOMAS ST., MEMPHIS (FRAYSER), (901) 433-9698.  Linda Butts won't reveal the secrets of her chili, but the popping combination of cumin, green chilies and chunks of tomato make hers a homemade chili that puts her tiny diner on the map!

* BLUES CITY CAFE, BEALE ST. DOWNTOWN, Chef Larry Crawford changed his chili recipe two years ago to better complement Blues City Cafe's malt vinegar hot sauce and its firm, tasty tamales that are light-years beyond most Mexican restaurants' tamales. Incredible!

* HUEY'S (ALL LOCATIONS),  Huey's chili & tamales are neck-and-neck with Blues City Cafe, except Huey's douses its rich and hearty chili right on its double-thick tamales instead of serving the chili on the side. The dish is dressed with pepperoncini, whose pickled flavor adds another dimension to this chili-tamale combo.

* BAYOU BAR & GRILL, MIDTOWN, Bayou's 24-year old Gator Chili recipe is almost like a chili gumbo. Sweet alligator meat with the Cajun-Creole Holy Trinity of celery, peppers and onions, the Gator Chili includes red beans and rice as carbs to take some of the heat off the Louisiana spices.
