COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - West Tennessee District Attorney Mike Dunavant is speaking out for the first time about last week's officer involved shooting in Mason, Tennessee.

"By all accounts, this was a very high risk situation, there could have been multiple injuries and deaths," he said.

Haywood County's chief deputy shot and killed Chastain Montgomery, Jr. in the middle of an intersection in downtown Mason.

Dunavant believes that deputy ended up saving others from being hit by stray gunfire.

"Our understanding is that Mr. Montgomery exited the vehicle and began firing multiple shots toward and at law enforcement officers including Mason police and Haywood County," he said.

According to Dunavant, Montgomery had an extensive criminal history in the Nashville area.

He was wanted on charges of attempted murder, and on top of that, he carjacked a truck before leading deputies on the chase that ended in his death.

"We found dye stained money which indicated it came from a bank or bank robbery," Dunavant said.

Shortly after his son's death, Chastain Montgomery, Sr. arrived at the crime scene in Mason.

"He was there," Dunavant said. "We don't really know his motives at this time, but we know that he blatantly disobeyed and fought with and resisted officers."

Dunavant said the Mason shooting is still under investigation by the TBI.

Agents will determine whether or not the Haywood County officer was justified in his shot that killed Chastain Montgomery, Jr.

Meanwhile, Dunavant plans to present this case to the next Tipton County grand jury on Monday, March 7th.
