MEMPHIS, TN -

The consolidation of Memphis City and Shelby County schools is a contentious issue. About all you can get people to agree on is that ultimately this will be hashed out in several different courtrooms and decided on by several different judges. And, of course, that means that the taxpayers will be adding to the wealth of many different attorneys as we go through this process.

Already Shelby County Schools has spent thousands on outside attorneys, some of whom are billing the system at the rate of more than $500 per hour. Let's assume that every dollar paid to a lawyer as we go through this is a dollar that would have been spent educating our kids. Also remember, the taxpayers will be paying for the lawyers on both sides of most of these disputes.

Now, lawyers are not bad people and we do need to resolve our differences and move forward to create the best large school district in the country. I'm just saying let's keep the silly stuff out of the hands of the attorneys who will be more than happy to take our money.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
