MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The mayor of Memphis and the superintendent of the city schools system are close to a compromise on funding that the city owes following a $57 million court judgment.
Mayor A C Wharton said Monday that soon they will have terms that can be presented to their respective legislative bodies. Superintendent Kriner Cash told The Commercial Appeal it won't be final until lawyers for both sides have checked off on it and the board has approved it.
Last week, Wharton offered to pay $12.5 million in installments through June 15 if the school system would agree to accept less than the $57 million that courts have said the city owes from 2008. But school board attorney Dorsey Hopson said that proposal did not meet the city's legal obligations.
