Twitter Kings of Memphis describe their secret to success

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - When it comes to the social media website Twitter, there are three heirs to the throne of "Twitter King" in Memphis.

At the top of the list is Justin Timberlake, who has more than 4 million followers.  And while other Memphis celebrities are in the top 20, the second and third Twitter users with the most followers are a couple of Average Joes.

With almost 40,000 followers, real estate investor and Ole Miss graduate Brett Clothier uses Twitter for both personal and professional communication.

"It's just like texting, but on the internet," he explained.

Because Tweets are confined to 140 characters or less, Clothier said, users must get right to the point.

"That's the one good thing about Twitter," he said, "Compared to other social media sites, it's short, concise, and to the point."

Clothier said his secret to achieving a high following is making your Tweets appealing.

"The main thing is be interesting and communicate with people," he said. "Don't just say, 'I am eating a cheeseburger,' and update everything you do. Make it something people want to hear about and talk about."

Clothier often talks with his wife, best friends and clients, letting them know what's going on.
 
"I just let all my 40,000 followers know that, again, Action News 5 and Andrew Douglas is here conducting an interview ," he said.

Another Twitter user in Memphis, Howard Bowling, has nearly twice as many followers at Clothier!

Bowling, 64, is a retired salesman who now sells internet domain names as a hobby.  He got hooked on Twitter during its early stages in 2007.

"It's like this big restaurant, with all these conversations going on, that not only are you allowed to jump in, but you're encouraged to, and expected to jump into these conversations," he said.

So how does a retired salesman get nearly the amount of people the size of Germantown and Collierville combined to follow him?

"The Average Joe like me, if you really want to build a following, you really have to interact with people," he said.

In the beginning, Bowling said, he spent six to eight hours a day on Twitter.  Now, he and Clothier are leading the way.

"I just started off kind of messing around," Clothier said. "I didn't realize the power of it, and how much it could help our business."

"Just jump in and have fun," Bowling added. "It's easy to do."
