HICKORY HILL (WMC TV) - THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP:  La Michoacana, 6075 Winchester (Hickory Ridge Mall), Hickory Hill/SE Memphis, (901) 795-8844 (mall office).

More than 13 flavors of homemade popsicles.

16 flavors of ice cream.

The bubble gum flavor with sprinkles ought to make the kids' day, as La Michoacana in Hickory Ridge Mall's food court makes the High Score of the Week with a 97 on its Memphis-Shelby County Health Department inspection April 19.

"All the ingredients that go into the ice cream come from Mexico," said Noemi Canseco, who runs the Hickory Ridge Mall location for the Gonzalez family.

Ari Gonzalez and his family operated an ice cream parlor in Mexico. Canseco said when they moved to the United States, Gonzalez tried his hand at construction, building houses instead of ice cream cones.

"He didn't like that too much," she said. "So he remembered his ice cream shop in Mexico and wanted to open one here."

The Gonzalezes actually opened four La Michoacana locations:  the Hickory Ridge Mall location, 4091 Summer Ave., 6635 Winchester and 1800 Stateline Rd. E. in Southaven, MS. Canseco said the Southaven store is where Gonzalez makes each flavor, then delivers them to each location.

The Hickory Ridge Mall location's prize flavor is Mexican Pinenut. Think of a delightfully buttery taste with a tinge of coconut.

Some of the homemade popsicles showcase interesting combinations, too, like the cucumber and chili popsicle.

"Everything goes better with chili," said customer Violet Mendez, plopping down a couple bucks for her cucumber-and-chili combo-sicle.

Just ate my dessert first -- as we look forward to revealing the Top 5 Mexican restaurants according to La Prensa Latina (http://www.laprensalatina.com/) next week on a special Cinco De Mayo Restaurant Scorecard!

LOW SCORES OF THE WEEK:

Home Away From Home Soul Food & More, 452 E. Shelby Dr. in Whitehaven, scored a 74 on April 18 with a food permit suspension notice:

"Ajax detergent stored on prep table w/food"

"waste water leaking on floor from underneath (dishwashing sink)"

Inspector wrote "DIRTY" 7 TIMES to describe everything from the freezer to the mop water.

Owner Angela Wilson said she just opened three weeks earlier.

Maybe too early.

"I'm fairly new to this," she said. "I should have taken the (health department's hygiene) class before I opened. I'm getting it fixed."

Danver's, 1831 Kirby Parkway in East Memphis, rated a 71 April 19 with a food permit suspension notice:

"container with white substance not labeled"

"waste water leak at (dishwashing sink) drain line on to cardboard"

Inspector wrote "DIRTY" 8 TIMES to describe everything from the hot unit to the ice bin.

The Danver's restaurant chain is a perennially poor-performer on the Scorecard. In 2009, its locations either failed or rated the lowest inspection score four times in an 8-month period. Its Midtown Memphis location at 1468 Union Ave. failed twice during that period.

In Aug. 2010, the Danver's location in Bartlett, TN -- 7970 Highway 64 -- earned back-to-back 71's, once on initial inspection, then again on re-inspection when its staff did not correct critical violations.

"We regret that our Danver's Restaurant (on Kirby Parkway) did not meet our own high standards on our last inspection," said Danver's president John Golon in an e-mail to Action News 5. "We corrected all critical violations and are awaiting re-inspection."
