TUNICA, MS -
(WMC-TV) - Hundreds in the Tunica area have been misplaced by the floodwaters and aren't allowed on their property. Tuesday, many wondered if anything will be left once they're allowed to return home.
Chuck Earwood and Bill Dees are neighbors, friends, and now, evacuees.
"It's just a disaster," said Earwood.
"One house is already turned over and floating down there," added Dees.
More than 300 homes on the Tunica cutoff are evacuated because of floodwaters. Earwood left his home at Charlie's Camp late last week, as waters rose around his home.
"We had heard it was going to flood in about a week, but it started coming in a lot faster than we thought it was," said Earwood.
He and his community rushed to save as much as they could.
"It was a rat race getting in and out," said Earwood. "Everyone trying to get out at once more or less."
Boats, golf carts, and motorcycles were moved to safety on the dry side of the levee. The Tunica County Sheriff's Department now has the cutoff on lock down. They wouldn't let our cameras through to get pictures. Earwood said he loved living on the Tunica cutoff.
"It's a nice little community," said Earwood. "You can ride golf carts around, fish, there's bars, anything you want to do."
However, Earwood fears his memories are the only thing that won't be drowned out by this years flood.
"It was a community that was wiped out," said Earwood, "that'll probably never be there again."
Earwood said he now has to wait for the water to recede. He is hoping FEMA will help replace his home.
