(WMC-TV) - The Mississippi River covered a large portion of Mud Island River Park Wednesday and continued to keep tributaries from draining.
James Hall said he is now sleeping with his boots on as water from Nonconnah Creek creeps closer to his Southwest Memphis home.
"Never experienced this," said Hall "Kind of spooky."
Emergency Management officials revealed Wednesday that water could remain above flood level through the first of June, long after the Mississippi crests at a near record 48 feet next Wednesday.
More than 700 homes are reportedly at risk of flooding in nearly two dozen zip codes across Shelby County.
"Don't depend on someone to show up and take care of you," said TEMA Director Jim Bassham. "Everybody in a household should take responsibility."
Dozens of people were still filling the need for volunteers at The Pyramid by filling thousands of sandbags.
"It's Memphis, it's my hometown, it could be me," said Carmen Alexander.
"We're laid off work because of the flooding and still getting paid," said casino employee Cyndi Scott. "And we don't have anything else to do so we decided to come down here and help."
The added assistance will be necessary as the water rises and long after it finally recedes.
The EMA urged you to pay attention to their flood maps. Just because you have seen some water already recede does not mean you are in the clear.
