MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Many across the Mid-South sought shelter Friday as the Mississippi River and its tributaries continued to rise.
The Millington Civic Center is one of several shelters open to flood victims across Shelby County. Denise Cooper and her children plan to spend Mother's Day weekend there.
"I want to be alive," said Cooper.
Cooper said she packed what she could in her minivan before leaving her house not far from where crews were finally forced to close the busy intersection of Thomas and Watkins due to flooding.
"It's kind of strange because the month of May, it's not supposed to be like this," said Cooper.
Over 100 cots at this shelter were expected to be filled by the end of Friday night, hours after evacuation notices went out to more than 1,000 residents living in areas expected to flood.
Many were sent to individual shelters from an assistance center set up in the parking lot of Raleigh Springs Mall.
"We're just trying to keep them going, letting them know we're here to help," said shelter manager Jamesia Faucek. "Just their basic needs, support them and give them somewhere to stay."
Additional shelters will open as needed for as long as floodwaters threaten neighborhoods.
Once the Mississippi River crests next week at 48 feet, it is now expected to persist at that level for three to four days instead of four to seven days previously predicted.
