(WMC-TV) - The Mississippi River was almost 13 feet over flood stage Saturday afternoon.
The river was measured at 47.12 feet after some problems early Saturday with a measuring gauge. The National Weather Service said the Mississippi River will crest Tuesday, May 10 at 48.0 feet.
A malfunctioning river gauge was looked at by technicians Saturday. They are currently using another gauge at Beale Street to measure the river.
Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell spoke at a press conference and asked people to remain calm.
Action News 5 received the following press release from the Shelby County Mayor's Office: "Our community is facing what could be a large-scale disaster. All of the mayors in the towns and cities throughout our county are staying in close contact with each other.
Additionally, we are routinely updating Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and other State and Federal officials about the flood. They assure us we'll have all available resources for our community.
Hundreds of people have assisted our emergency responders during this critical time. I appreciate their willingness to fill sandbags, work at shelters, prepare food and keep our information hotline staffed at the emergency operations center. Their sprit of volunteering continues to inspire those of us here in Shelby County and others across the nation.
