Mid-South churches reach out in prayer in unique ways

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Some Mid-South congregations are getting creative by offering prayer through pagers or even the drive-thru.

Finding a prayer partner in the Mid-South just got a lot easier, especially for residents like Kathy Gilmer.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer in February.

"The ultrasound tech said, 'what is that noise?'  And I said, 'that's my prayer pager going off,'" said Gilmer.  "And I said, 'people are praying that there's not more cancer.'"

Her husband signed her up for a prayer pager ministry online.  Every time the pager goes off, members of a local church are lifting her up.

"Random times during the day, it'll go off," she added.  "When I'm over getting my chemo treatments, it'll be going off, just letting me know people are praying for me, it's a real encouragement."

At Whitten Memorial Baptist Church, encouragement comes from the drive-thru.

"We had some people actually stop on the side of the road where the sign holders are and they leave their requests there," said Pastor Eddie Knight.

Knight said volunteers will either pray for you on the spot in your car, or they will take your request and pray on it later.

"Whether it's a bad day at work, or the flood that's going on now, or the economy, whatever it may be," said Knight.

Drive-thru prayers take place every Friday in May from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Whitten Memorial Baptist Church at the corner of Whitten and Macon.
