(WMC-TV) - John Dawson is counting down the days until college. He just graduated fifth in his class from Covington High School, and he got the surprise of his life graduation morning.
"My brother has been in Kandahar, Afghanistan for three months, and he actually got to come into town for graduation," Dawson said.
John and his brother Joshua were reunited graduation morning after months of preparation.
Joshua has been in the Army for two years, but said he would never miss his brother's big day !
"It makes me feel a lot older than I am, but we're definitely proud of him and he's going to go on and do big things," Joshua said.
The brothers say they've always been close, despite an 11-year age difference. In fact, John was the first person to talk to his big brother when he landed in Afghanistan.
"All of the cartoons I watched growing up whenever I was younger, I lived through him growing up," John adds.
Josh Dawson says he's always tried to make his whole family - especially his little brother - proud as he fights on the frontline for freedom.
His message is simple.
"It may not mean that much to some people but a small thank you to a soldier can turn their whole day around," he said.
John Dawson plans to attend Christian Brothers University in the fall and major in applied psychology.
