(WMC-TV) - The Mid-South has recorded its first two heat-related deaths of 2011, officials said Tuesday.
In Memphis, a spokesperson for the Shelby County Health Department said a 75-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment Monday afternoon.
Friends and neighbors identified the woman as Arlene White, who they described as still spunky at age 75.
White was found dead Monday inside her apartment at the Magnolia Terrace senior apartments on North Third Street.
Paramedics and police responded to the building after White's body was discovered during a routine check of residents.
White had an air conditioner, but it was either not on or not working. She also had indoor fans, but all of her windows were closed.
In Tipton County, a 60-year-old man died Tuesday after falling in his driveway. John Lemly of Brighton, who was an amputee, fell while exiting his van Monday afternoon.
It wasn't the first time Lemly fell.
"Not too long ago he was coming home from work and he had fell out of his wheel chair," said Tammy Davis, who lives nearby. "Don't know how long he had been out there."
Monday, officials said Lemly laid in his driveway for several hours before he was found. He was taken to Baptist East where he later died.
The deaths were reported on the same day that Memphis set another heat record. Tuesday's high of 98 degrees broke the previous record high of 96 degrees, set in 1953.
