MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Congratulations to the county commissioners in Broward County, Florida. Like many governments across the country, the commissioners there were under pressure to balance their budget in difficult economic times. Somehow or another, they struggled through the most difficult cut of all. They cut out the lunches and other meals that they had been buying with tax dollars for their own meetings. A small token, for sure. They saved less than $8,000, but they made a decision they knew their constituents would respect.

Now contrast that with our Shelby County Commissioners. They're spending three times as much on their meals as the commissioners in Florida were but yet they could not bring themselves to make this simple symbolic gesture. In fact, Monday night, one of our commissioners went so far as to say he would "starve to death" if he did not have the benefit of the taxpayer-paid meals. On the other hand, our commissioners had no problem reaching a consensus to slash the pay of some other county employees by 10% in that same meeting.

That's a strange way to define leadership.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
