Andy's Rest. Scorecard: DeJAVU, all over again!

SOUTH MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - It's deja vu all over again, on both sides of the Scorecard.

DeJAVU, 936 Florida St., is our first former Big Tip to earn one of our High Scores of the Week. Chef Gary Williams and his staff rated a 97 in the restaurant's latest Memphis-Shelby County Health Department inspection.

"We always stay in the 90's...95, 96...but the 97 put us over the top," said Chef Gary Williams. "We're just having a great time. Service, food and cleanliness: it all goes hand-in-hand!"

The last time fifth-generation-chef Williams was on the Scorecard, DeJAVU was the Big Tip of the Week, nominated by my Facebook fans (please read that Scorecard review from November here:  http://www.wmctv.com/story/13519721/andys-rest-scorecard-dejavu).

His tasty Cajun-Creole dishes and vegan recipes from his New Orleans upbringing continue to wow customers like Paul Garavelli. He hired Williams to cater his wedding.

"Everybody loved the pasta primavera more than the shrimp, meat and cheese we served, even the carnivores," joked Garavelli.

Order either the Big Keith Bayou Classic, the Seafood Platter or a bowl of Williams' Seafood Gumbo.

You'll find a different kind of deja vu -- the bad kind -- on the other side of South Memphis.

Dixie Queen, 4062 S. Third St., dodged a failing inspection by just one point, a 70, in its latest review June 8:

"mold inside cold bar cooler"

"restroom not accessible"

"hamburger patties, ham, hot dogs (at potentially hazardous food temps.)"

The inspector wrote "dirty" a dozen times to describe the store's conditions.

The South Memphis Dixie Queen's a regular on the wrong end of the Scorecard. It failed its health inspection in 2007. It's earned the Low Score of the Week twice in the last two years.

Manager Keisha Moffitt is typically very pleasant and accommodating.

She was on vacation this week. It showed.

'Barbara,' the person left in charge, had her daughter hang up the phone when I called. During the next call, she took my message to have owner David Raffanti return my call.

A day after this story ran, Raffanti called. He apologized.

"There's no excuse (for our score)," he said. "There's no excuse to every score below an 80. It's embarrassing to me, and it won't happen again.

"That was very unprofessional for Barbara to not leave a message with me. I have an open door policy. I have been doing this for more than 20 years. You're so use to seeing the same thing that sometimes something slips by the way-side."

Sounds like someone's head is going to roll at the Dixie Queen.
