MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Tennessee Flea Market on Winchester was one of the largest indoor flea markets in the Mid-South, but now, it's going out of business.

"Our lease on the property that the previous management negotiated went from $15,000 a month to $45,000 a month, and we've had a problem with our vendors not paying the rent," Flea Market operator Scottie Fain said Monday.

That had vendors like Darin Freeman very upset.

"It's not fair at all, only because we trusted in the flea market to carry that capital, and so when we carry that capital we make money on that, but when they tell us to get out you can't do anything but get out," Freeman said.

Vendors were told this weekend they had to move out within 24 hours.

"They actually have until Tuesday of this week to get everything out," Fain said.

Now, hundreds of vendors are left without a place to sell their goods.

"I'm an artist, a photographer and I'm selling a whole lot of paintings, t-shirts, pictures, and stuff like that," Freeman said.

According to Fain, the flea market opened this past April with enough space for about 600 vendors. Some of those vendors, who say they have already paid rent through July, are now blaming property managers for making bad business decisions.

"Everybody makes mistakes in business, and I think they made quite a few mistakes," Freeman said.

"The rent was due from the 15th of the previous month to the 15th," Fain replied. "Their rent is paid.  They have gotten what they've paid for."

As for the future of the Tennessee Flea Market, Fain said the quicker his business can get out of Memphis, the better.
