BYHALIA, MS -

(WMC-TV) – Authorities in Marshall County have recovered the body of a man who drowned after jumping off a bridge into a river while swimming with friends Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Beale Road near Byhalia, Mississippi.

Witnesses said the man was with a group a friends who were swimming when he jumped. Three teenage brothers who were swimming saw the man going under, but thought he was playing because he said he could swim.

They realized he needed help and tried to save him.

"I was down pretty deep after everybody else let him go," Jonathan Palmer said. "I was still trying to help him. He had my leg and I was going down with him. And I was struggling. So what I had to do I had to kick my leg free or I would have died, too."

The three brothers dove down a few more times but could not find the man. They were not sure why he went under.

The man's body was recovered shortly before 4:00 p.m.
