(WMC-TV) - With the average American household spending $2,000 a year on gasoline, and the prospects that will be much higher this year, even a discount of a few percentage points can be worth the effort.
Some supermarkets offer discounted gas to customers with loyalty cards.
"What they're saying is for every $100 that you spend in the store, you'll get an additional 10 cents off a gallon," said AnnaMaria Andriotis with SmartMoney.com.
Andriotis also said memberships in warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam's Club get you access to gas as much as 10 cents a gallon cheaper.
"Don't go out and get that membership if you're just using it to get discounted gas," said Andriotis. "It's going to take you a while to recoup that money."
You can also get yourself a credit cars that has teamed up with gas stations to offer rebates of up to 10 cents a gallon, provided you do no let your card accumulate debt.
"It's worth it if you get the credit card and if you pay your balance off in full each month," said Andriotis.
