MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Walmart employees put in hours off the clock Friday to give the Mid-South Food Bank an extreme makeover.

"It's volunteer work, they don't have to be here but they want to be here," said Walmart Field Manager Donny Milam.

"It's going to be more colorful," added Mid-South Food Bank President and CEO Estella Mayhue-Greer. "We had boring white walls, and now there's color in there".

Volunteers took time out of their schedule to go in, put shelves up, paint walls, and help restock. The extra space is needed more than ever because donations are down.

"We're approximately two millions pounds less in our inventory than what we were last year," said Mayhue-Greer.

The renovations add more space for the agencies, "to come in and shop and hopefully we'll have more food" she said.

Milam knows first hand what it means to give back to the community.

"I'm actually from Alabama, and we had a lot of damage during the tornadoes there. This gives me a point where I'm not in Alabama right now but I can help out other areas," he said.

With a lot of elbow grease and even more enthusiasm, volunteers hope their time will impact the community.

"For Walmart it shows that we do care," said Milam.

The Food Bank hopes the public will respond by filling up empty shelves.
