Ten years after the attacks of September 11, 2001 the construction at the World Trade Center continues.
Dominating the construction site is the ever-rising Freedom Tower, which will be the main building of the new World Trade Center. The tower will eventually soar 1,776 feet off the ground, include two observation decks and will have a light at the top in a flourish meant to evoke the Statue of Liberty.
Also under construction is the 9/11 Memorial. The tree covered memorial will feature two reflecting pools situated in the footprint of the Twin Towers. These pools will have the names off all those who died during the 9/11 attacks as well as those who died in the 1993 World Trade Center bombings.
For those visiting lower Manhattan, the memorial is hard to see behind the active construction zone, but glimpses of it can be seen from the nearby World Financial Center and through the underground subway and commuter rail stations under the site.
A new 7 World Trade Center opened in 2006 while the 9/11 Memorial is set to open on September 11, 2011. The Freedom Tower is expected to open its doors by the end of 2013.
