COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM/WMC-TV) - From luxury hotels to sailing on the seas.  Booking your next getaway now, could save a lot later.

"These travel companies have inventory, space that they still have available, so they're trying to offer people discounts to book in advance," explains AAA Travel Manager Roxanne Towler.

It's called the "shoulder season", sandwiched in between high travel periods like summer and Christmas.

"The best way to look at it is, if children are in school, you're going to get a better deal than if they're not," adds Towler.

For example, Towler says she found a three day cruise for just under $200 per person.  It was a special discount for soldiers and veterans.

"Carnival really is promoting military discounts, they have a lot of sailings and the best deal is right after Thanksgiving and before Christmas."

If you're looking for cheaper airfare, check out these flights from Atlanta at fly.com.

Some are less than $50 one way for travel though December.  Vegas vacations are hot right now too.

"Las Vegas, the Cosmopolitan Hotel, which is a brand, new hotel, a Marriott autograph collection, and they've got stay two nights, get a hundred dollar gift card."

Universal is slashing its four day park pass by $36.  We also found a hotel near Disney for half off, plus an upgrade with breakfast.

Closer to home, you could go to the Sea Palms Resort on St Simons Island for $99 a night, plus a credit, that's almost a hundred off the regular price.

A few other tips for your next vacation:

  • Use a credit card that allows you to redeem rewards points. This could save even more money.

Here's a list from Nerd Wallet of the best cards that pay, or click here to go to Bankrate to find a card that suits you.

  • Turn to Twitter-- @Travelzoo tweets about unadvertised rates and flash sales daily.  Every Tuesday, @JetBlueCheeps tweets 25 or more discounted seats.
  • Join a hotel loyalty program--Some offer free wifi, express check in, plus you'll get emails about deals and discounts.
