Diggy Simmons coming to Memphis with anti-bullying message

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Bullying is a serious problem in Memphis, so this weekend a famous rapper will team up with local leaders as part of an anti-bullying campaign.

Teen Rapping sensation Diggy Simmons has signed on to help kick off Saturday's anti-bullying campaign. The son of Reverend Run of Run DMC, and the nephew of music mogul Russell Simmons, Diggy has shaped his career around a positive anti-violence beat.

"He's made a pledge at 16-years old not to curse in his rhymes," said Ladell Beamon of he Heal the Hood Foundation.

Beamon's foundation is spearheading the anti-bullying campaign along, along with Hickory Ridge Mall, Incredible Pizza and the Memphis Police Department.

"We're just excited to be a part of it," said MPD Colonel Tony Rosser.

Part of the anti-bullying campaign focuses on a "super hero" essay writing contest, where youngsters are asked to describe their favorite hero focusing on topics like integrity, honor, and dignity.

"We want to be a positive influence to these children, starting with their dad's, too," said Incredible Pizza's Drake Lee.

Other performers at the event will be the twin rapping group 'Devotion.' They'll keep the excitement going while inviting students take the anti-bullying pledge...

Parent leaders throughout the city, like Helen Collins, hope the event will help make a difference.

"We're so glad that everyone here has come out to take part," Collins said.

Memphis City Schools and Walmart are also taking part in the anti-bullying campaign. The free event runs from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, October 15th, at the Hickory Ridge Mall.
