MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - One person is dead after a house fire broke out around 11:30 Wednesday night in the 6300 block of Golden Park Drive in the Hickory Hill neighborhood of Memphis.

According to the Memphis Fire Department, firefighters put out the flames shortly after midnight.

Just hours after fire raced through their home forcing them to run for their lives, Patricia Barreto and her family sifted through what was left of their belongings.

"The smoke started coming out from both sides, and then we heard the alarm, she said.

Barreto said members were sleeping when the fire started. Everyone got out but her 37-year old brother, Jose Vizcaya.

"The room was already full of smoke and that smoke put him down," she said.

Relatives said Vizcaya initially made it out of the house, but went back inside to rescue his 15-year-old daughter.

According to Barreto, her brother went to the attic area looking for his daughter, not knowing she was already safe and headed outside.

Now, that daughter and two other siblings are without a father. To make matters worse, smoke and water damage has made the home un-livable, leaving Barreto and her relatives are homeless.

The home did have a working smoke detector, and the American Red Cross is assisting the residents who survived.
