NEW ALBANY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Two men are in the Union County jail tonight, caught while committing a crime while on parole. But New Albany police say they are the prime suspects in the murder of Amanda Price and the shooting of her husband, New Albany High School's football coach.

Amanda Price was shot to death when she stepped out of the back door of her home December 5. Her husband Ron Price was shot in the shoulder when rushed to her side.

Less than two weeks later, police say there has been a break in the case.

"These people are being held," said New Albany Police Chief David Grisham. "They can't get out of jail."

Grisham said Union County sheriff's deputies caught two men stealing scrap metal this week. Though he wouldn't reveal exactly why, Grisham said he is confident the men are linked to the shooting that rocked this community.

"Both of them have criminal backgrounds," he said. "They are well known to the law enforcement community here. They are persons of interest in this case."

Police say the two men lived together in a trailer park just a few blocks from the Price's home.

The men attended New Albany High School and Grisham said it's possible Ron Price even coached them on the football team. Amanda Price's mother said her family is anxious to learn whether the shooting was random or personal.

"Of course, it won't bring Amanda back," said her mother Kathy Cossey. "The whole thing was so senseless, useless, but it makes everybody feel more comfortable to know that we don't have to be afraid."

While they struggle to understand this senseless crime, there is some consolation that those who robbed them of their loved one may already be behind bars.

The police chief said murder charges could come after his department ties up loose ends in the investigation, possibly next week. He said there's no rush, since the suspects are already in custody and aren't going anywhere.
