MY TURN: An abuse of his power

(WMC-TV) - So, we're all scratching our heads. Why would former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour issue pardons and clemency for dozens of people, including people who committed heinous crimes?

There have to be better answers than the ones Barbour has given so far.

This is not a new issue for Governor Barbour. Back in 2008, he released a convicted killer who worked as a trusty at the governor's mansion, defending the practice as a Mississippi custom.

This week he elaborated on that reasoning by saying that he issued the pardons so the criminals could find gainful employment, obtain professional licenses and vote. And saving the worst for last, he said he pardoned all of these people including the murderers so they could hunt.

Using an expression that perhaps the former governor will understand - that dog won't hunt.

It's a shame that the irresponsible acts of one elected official require a rewriting of state laws, but given the magnitude of Barbour's pardon spree, that is the course of action that I recommend.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
