BATESVILLE, MS -

(WMC-TV) - One man is recovering after a burst of gunfire in Batesville, Mississippi Monday.

The Panolian reports that the shooting happened around noon and left one man seriously injured.

Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby said several people were in the street when shots were fired.  One member of that group was shot.

According to witnesses, ten or more shots were fired in rapid succession.

"It's a gang-related thing," said resident Lisa Tunison.  "They need to stop all this black on black crime, because it's Martin Luther King Day and we need to stick together."

The Panolian also reports that the victim was found on Vance Road and was eventually transported to the MED.

Shell casings were scattered in the yard at a house on Vance Road and down toward Van Voris Street.

Police stretched crime scene tape along the street where the shell casings were found.  Witnesses also reported hearing gunfire during the weekend.

The sheriff could not release a motive for the shooting.  He said drugs have become a problem countywide and that Vance Road was part of a higher risk area.

Within hours of the shooting, police took several persons of interest into custody.

While police will not confirm a name, the Panolian reported 23-year-old Jeremy Wright was the man shot Monday.

Police are searching for more suspects.
