The witness told investigators that a man in a truck told him he was sent to work on two air conditioning units at the New Hope Church of the Nazarene, near Macon and Summer, and needed help loading them into his vehicle. The witness told officers that he refused to help, but watched as the man took the AC units and drove away.
The witness was able to get the truck's license plate number and called officers when he spotted the vehicle the following day.
Officers have charged Benton Gaines with two counts of theft.
