(WMC-TV) - Forty of the more than 100 dogs recovered from a U-Haul truck in Fayette County last month were sent to Florida Wednesday.
Some of the dogs have been taken to shelters in Collierville, Memphis, Fayette County, Nashville and Knoxville. Forty others took a first class flight from FedEx to Florida.
Memphis' FedEx Superhub ships up to 2 million packages per day, but a one-of-a-kind Wednesday afternoon flight including the 40 dogs bound for Miami.
"They're going to be little snowbirds, I think, which will be awesome," said Tracy Reis with the American Humane Association.
The dogs are some of 140 rescued from the back of a U-Haul truck pulled over by state agents on I-40 two weeks ago.
At their initial court appearance on aggravated animal cruelty charges, the dogs' owners turned them over the American Humane Association.
Since then, every dog has been spayed, neutered and vaccinated. They are now being spread across the country to rescue groups who will put them up for adoption.
The story tugged at the shipping giant's heartstrings hard enough that FedEx broke its own rules.
"Normally, FedEx does not move pets. That is a very strict policy that we have, so this is a one-time exception," said Shea Leordeanu with FedEx. "Because it's here in Memphis with our world headquarters in the backyard, how could we say no to these little guys?"
Reis offered a fond farewell to the dogs as they left Wednesday.
"It's a relief that we know where these guys are going to be before we leave," said Reis.
Thirty dogs remain at an emergency shelter in Memphis, but they will be taken to a shelter in Birmingham Thursday. The one cat found in the U-Haul has been adopted in Memphis.
