SOUTHAVEN, MS -
(WMC-TV) – Southaven Mayor Greg Davis left a meeting Tuesday night without speaking to the media, but he couldn't escape demands from unhappy citizens who want him to leave his office.
The overwhelming number of people who spoke urged the embattled mayor to step down, but that's something the city's board of aldermen already failed to get him to do.
Davis is still the target of a criminal probe into his alleged misuse of city money.
"Personally I don't care about his sexual preference, but I do care about his fiscal malfeasance and corruption," said Mike Smith, one of those who pleaded with the mayor during Davis's first meeting with aldermen since they unsuccessfully requested his resignation, just before he took an undisclosed leave of absence.
Davis referred many citizens' questions to the city attorney, while other residents took issue with the entire board.
"You have the legislative oversight to control what's going on and dropped the ball," said one resident. "You haven't done your job."
A separate room was set up to handle the overflow crowd, but people complained after technical issues interrupted the audio.
Although a small number of Davis' supporters showed up, only one got up to speak.
"Our mayor is the mayor and if you have a problem with him show it at election time," one of his supporters told the board.
The mayor was planning another run for re-election the last time he spoke to Action News, but he left Tuesday's meeting through a back door without taking media questions.
The mayor did announce that some of the MDOT funds previously withheld from the city would be reinstated.
Meanwhile, aldermen voted to explore the possibility of conducting its own independent audit of city finances.
