MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Councilwoman Janis Fullilove is now asking for a forensic audit of the Memphis Police Department - she said there are many unanswered questions surrounding the newly released audit of the MPD's Organized Crime Unit.
A drug fund of more than $3.8 million can be used for drug education and enforcement. However, according to the report, there was improper use of that which included $183,555 in overtime pay and more than $41,000 in purchases. The audit also showed a lack of adequate documentation for expenditures.
"Something doesn't seem quite right. We don't know how 23,000 rounds of ammunition have just disappeared. You got thousands of dollars being spent out of drug money not supposed to be spent," said Fullilove.
Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong is taking steps to make sure certain mechanisms are in place, but he said there's a lot more that has to be done.
Fullilove is asking the state comptrollers office, Department of Justice, TBI and FBI to get involved.
"We forwarded copies of the audit to what we feel is the appropriate investigative bodies. It's in their hands and they'll make the determination as to whether or not they feel further investigating is warranted," said Armstrong.
Fullilove asked for a city audit on the MPD Organized Crime Unit when former director Larry Godwin was leaving, and successor Toney Armstrong was about to take office.
The results from the audit have Fullilove and others in city government concerned.
"The audit has revealed that certain managed controls were not in place. Going forward we will have those controls in place, " said Memphis Chief Administrative Officer George Little. Copyright 2012 WMC-TV. All rights reserved.
