MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A group of Mid-South Boy Scouts put their pledge to serve the community into action Saturday by putting food on the tables of needy families.

The coldest day of the year could not stop the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America from carrying out their deeds.

Scouts went door to door collecting food that will stock the shelves of the Mid-South Food Bank.

"I do this to try to help out the people who are less fortunate, and also to teach my son to do service for others," said troop leader David Edwards.

The scouts had already placed Mid-South Food Bank collection bins around the city in support of the 2012 Scouting for Food Campaign, "Feeding a Great Need."

"It's been a tough time, even when you hear about the economy is coming back," said Marsha Wells with the Mid-South Food Bank.  "Recovery is still a long way away for people who don't have enough food to eat."

This generous gesture has become an annual father-son tradition.

"My son joined as a six-year-old Tiger and we have been doing it for about six years," said Edwards.

Last year, the scouts collected 33,000 pounds of food and more than $1,700 for the Mid-South Food Bank.
