MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Tennessee state Sen. Ophelia Ford went on a nearly 20 minute tirade at a senate committee meeting Tuesday as she railed against a proposal to increase penalties for assaults on health-care workers.

Ford argued that instead of protecting nurses from patients, it was patients who need protection from the people she called "mean, hateful nurses."

Ford's verbal assault cited her own experiences during two separate hospitalizations in recent years. The senate committee's chair tried to end Ford's commentary at least twice, but she continued arguing that patients are the ones who need protection - from nurses.

"I cannot tell you the horrific experience that I had - and it was nurses who were mainly doing these things to me," she said.

Other senators did not agree, the panel ultimately advanced the bill on a 5-4 vote.

Senator Ford had a rant against funeral home regulators some years ago - unfortunately she was not able to reached for the story Tuesday night.
