MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - One Mid-South nursing organization is firing back after recent, incendiary comments made by Tennessee state Sen. Ophelia Ford.

During a committee hearing in Nashville Tuesday, Ford referred to "mean, hateful nurses."

"I cannot tell you the horrific experience that I had and it was nurses who were mainly doing these things to me," Ford said.

Her comments prompted a response from the Mid-South Nursing Institute, a nonprofit supporting nurses and work related issues.

"I am disappointed in Sen. Ford's statements," said Robert Coch, the group's executive director. "For 11 years nurses were judged to be the most honest, ethical profession according to a Gallup poll."

The group hopes the state senator's explosive comments didn't take away from the issue of providing more protection for nurses and other health care professionals.

"Protecting health care workers from assault is a real issue because it is a health care issue, kind of an epidemic that we've got going on in our own profession," Coch said.

In fact, Ford's comments came during a proposal to increase penalties for assaults on healthcare workers. Ford argued patients are the ones who need protection from nurses.

Action News 5's Janice Broach is in Nashville tonight tracking down State Senator Ophelia Ford.  She will have a full report tonight at 10.
