Gilt Edge, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Neighbors along a dead end road in Tipton County say they're tired of reaching a dead end at city hall when it comes to paving their street.

Residents who live along Walter Fletcher Lane in Gilt Edge say the term "turn off the paved road" really hits home.

"We've been turning off the paved road since I moved here in 2005, and I've been working on getting attention to the road since 2006," says Todd Hill.

Residents who live along the road say they've been fighting the Gilt Edge mayor and city council for years to get the road paved.

They say it's the only road in the city that's not paved.

"Buses will not come down this road, I'm told they used to but the road is too rough and there's tree limbs that need to be removed," adds Hill.

The county says Walter Fletcher Lane is a city road.

However, Gilt Edge's mayor says the road is private and believes it sets a bad precedent for the city to pave a private road.

"My wife works at FedEx. I bought her a new car and I don't want to pay to have her front end fixed every month," says resident Walter Rothenberger.

Neighbors along Walter Fletcher Lane say they figure it will cost about twenty thousand dollars to pave the road.

Right now, they say they've already spent about five thousand dollars putting gravel down.

Residents say they're tired of spending their own money fixing the problem, when it should be up to the city.

They say they've discovered a state law that would make their street a public road.

"I don't mind fixing the road, if it's my road, yeah if it's a private road, but it's not, that's bull crap," Rothenberger says.

Neighbors say on top of being rough, this gravel road also decreases their property value.

Gilt Edge Mayor Steve Fletcher told Action News Five that if the county is willing to annex the road and pave it, he will work with them to accomplish that.
