BARTLETT, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Drivers can breathe a sigh of relief the next time they find themselves approaching an accident because TDOT wants crashes along Tennessee highways cleaned up in 90 minutes.
Most Mid-south drivers know what it's like to be stuck in traffic, backed up for miles as a result of a bad wreck on the highway.
But that could soon come to an end, thanks to a new plan by TDOT to drastically cut down the time it takes to clear roads after a car crash.
"I understand TDOT's concern because it is a hazard whenever it takes too long to clear a scene," said Deborah Thweatt, of Bartlett Towing Service.
Thweatt, whose company is a contractor with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, said when drivers are stranded on an interstate after a crash, chances are one of her trucks will be sent to the scene.
TDOT and the Department of Safety are putting the new plan in place to clear up highway accidents as soon as possible.
"When accidents do occur, especially when there are total closures, we want to make sure everyone is as safe as possible," said Nichole Lawrence, of TDOT.
The goal is to clear roads after major accidents in 90 minutes, and clear minor accidents in less than 30 minutes.
"The only problem I see with that, is if we get to the scene and the officers who are in charge of calling for tow trucks aren't aware they need another truck," said Thweatt. "It may take longer for us to get there with traffic and things being backed up."
However, to get it done, TDOT will need fast responses from wrecker services and drivers will also be asked to do their part by staying patient.
Thweatt said once traffic backs up, there's always the risk of another accident happening, so safety and time is always key
