MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton announced the appointment of a new interim animal shelter director Wednesday.

Interim director James Rogers appears to have no previous experience when it comes to animals.  He most recently worked as a senior manager for the US Postal Service.

Rogers will be overseeing the shelter three months after its move to a new facility and amid concerns from animal activists.

While Wharton said he believes Rogers is qualified for the job given his background overseeing a large staff, some who closely watch the shelter are not convinced.

Animal activists do believe it is good to have someone overseeing day-to-day operations at the shelter.  They hope a permanent director eventually hired will have experience in the field.

There is no information on how long Rogers might serve on an interim basis.
