(WMC-TV) - Major progress has been made on the Beale Street Landing projects in the last few months.

Since 2002, many Memphis taxpayers have groaned about the rising cost of the project, but now there is a virtual video of what the riverfront will look like when the project is completed.

An entry plaza could be used for civic gatherings.  Nearby landscaped islands would offer a place to lounge and watch the river.  A restaurant would offer Memphis' first riverview dining experience.

"Memphis does not have a restaurant right now that overlooks the river, which is hard to believe," said Memphis City Councilman Jim Strickland.

This week, the Memphis City Council accepted a half-million dollar federal grant for the project.  Costs have risen from $29 million to $43 million since the project's inception.

Beale Street Landing is one topic that seems to unify council members.

"The river is our best amenity," said Memphis City Councilman Joe Brown.  "We've got to make investments in the river."

"It's going to be up and going this summer," said Strickland.

Construction has ramped up in recent days and the vision is beginning to take shape.

"I'm hoping at the end of the day, we have a first-class facility down there that adds to our waterfront," said Strickland.

Council members said Beale Street Landing benefits every Memphis community because it is free to walk on the river.  They said the waterfront development could triple the city's income.
