MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Collierville police came together with dozens of people Wednesday morning to help keep children safe from sex predators.

In a predator awareness training class, Collierville employees who work with children were given tips on how to report the potential threat of a pedophile.

"It's important for us to get the information out, especially to town employees who are working with the general public every day," said Collierville police detective Richard Mawyer.

Liz Deely attentively took notes.  Deely works at a fitness center where she said protecting children is a top priority.

"Every single person that walks in the front door, if they don't have their scan card, then we want to see their drivers license," said Deely.  "We've actually offended some people, but I always tell them I'd rather offend someone than take the chance."

The training course was held at the Collierville Community Center.  Police said places like community centers, libraries, parks, and recreational facilities where predators prey on children who appear to be vulnerable.

"The more eyes we have out there watching, the less likely a child is going to be victimized," said Mawyer.

Sexual offenders are required to register, and Mawyer said locating those offenders on sites like the TBI is important.

"We hope every home in Collierville has a list of our sex offenders so they know what they look like and know where they live," said Mawyer.

"The fact that there are over 2,000 sexual predators in Shelby County scares me, and I think that everybody should just do their part," said Deely.
