MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - For the first time since a deadly shooting killed a Mississippi State student in a residence hall, his stepfather is talking to the media.

It's not the usual getaway vehicle, but a man charged with capital murder in the shooting of a Mississippi State student hopped on a Greyhound bus and was captured in Memphis.

"It's not something that is ever going away," said Frank Patton, stepfather of John Sanderson.

Patton is still in shock after the shooting death of his stepson at Mississippi State University where Sanderson was majoring in photojournalism He was shot to death in a dorm on campus.

"It's hard to think. It's hard to sleep, knowing that somebody just died like 30 feet from you," said MSU student Chris Weatherspoon.

Mason Perry Jones was arrested Sunday night by a U.S. Marshal's Task Force at the Greyhound bus station in Memphis.

"The task force received a call that there was a fugitive from justice at the bus station in Memphis and that fugitive has a warrant for their arrest for robbery," said Dick Hackett, of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department.

Jones spent the night in the DeSoto County Jail after being arrested on a warrant from Jackson, MS.

The Mississippi State Police picked him up and took him back to Starkville where he was charged with capital murder in the shooting death on the campus.

University investigators say surveillance video shows three people, who are not believed to be students, in the dorm. There were also witnesses to the shooting.

"There were three individuals in the room with my son and two other guys and they did go out the window when John was shot," said Patton.

It's not clear what the shooting was about or if Sanderson knew the people captured on video in the dorm.

"What you don't prepare for is losing your child and especially in a way such as this," said Patton.

Investigators believe the two other suspects may have left the Starkville area.

It isn't clear how the three suspects got inside the dorm because a key is needed to enter the building.
