MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer shot in the line of duty has been released from the hospital.
The shooter and carjacking suspect, Edward Sample, is in jail. Sample is charged with attempted second degree murder and possession of a firearm after he shot Memphis police officer Josh Shearer.
The incident occurred in the Raleigh area near James Road and Homewood Drive around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The victim of the carjacking notified officers that he had been robbed by two men on April 2. Wednesday, he had just spotted his stolen vehicle at the Lantern Square Apartments.
"The guys told me to give them the keys and asked how much money I had on me," said the carjacking victim, who asked to remain anonymous. "After that, they tried to force me into the car, but I ended up running."
Police spotted the carjacking victim's stolen silver Chevy Impala as it veered off the road, then saw Sample run from the car and into a nearby wooded area.
"I'm glad they found the car," said the carjacking victim. "That's the main thing we wanted back was the car."
The officers ran and caught up with Sample and a struggle ensued. Sample pulled out a gun and fired on the officers, hitting Shearer in the chest.
Shearer returned fire, hitting Sample.
"I don't know what's on these folks minds out here," said the carjacking victim. "It was crazy to me, it shocked me. Full of anger or something, you know."
Shearer, who was wearing protective body armor, was taken to the MED in non-critical condition and was later released.
