MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A trail of rust led Memphis investigators to a suspects stealing metal from air conditioner units in the Raleigh Springs Mall.

Raleigh Springs Mall director Juanita Jones said she and Memphis police officers were watching surveillance video Thursday when they said they saw this 58 year-old Dung Tran go behind a trash compactor.

"The officer asked me who was the guy walking, and I said I don't know, he's not supposed to be back there," said Jones.

According to a police affidavit of complaint, Tran had an accomplice, 51-year-old Darrell Norry.  Both were caught on surveillance video loading up on scrap metal.

Jones said when she reviewed the tapes, she realized it had been happening for months.

"Anything with copper, cutting all our fuse boxes, they are down off the wall," said Jones.  "They have stripped this whole store."

Police said the suspects would come in and out of a narrow passageway of a trash chute every day.  Jones said they even set up temporary housing in order to stay overnight.

"It takes some time, so they have literally been living here so they could do this job," she said.

The suspects were working inside the old Goldsmith's building.  Jones pointed out they had mattresses and even food to take snack breaks.

She credited the work of her staff and Memphis police for busting what she called dumb criminals.

"It's ridiculous," she said.  "And for someone to be this stupid and live in these conditions for some copper, it's not worth it."

Tran and Norry are charged with burglary of a building, possession of burglary tools, theft of property, and vandalism.
