More arrests in Hispanic nightclub drug bust

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police arrested three men for their role in a drug ring at Hispanic clubs in the city.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation.

Ricardo Torres is charged with conspiring to distribute large amounts of cocaine.  From his house, police said he sold an undercover officer a half kilogram stamped with the initials MM, for Mexican Mafia.

"Doesn't surprise me one bit," said neighbor Brenda Pike.  "'Cause we had a feeling that something like that was going on.  Really did."

According to court records, Omar Velazquez set up the cocaine sale, even though he is already behind bars at 201 Poplar.

Velazquez was arrested at El Charro Billares in November when investigators raided six Hispanic nightclubs as part of a long term investigation into a drug trafficking organization run by Victor Sotelo Morales.

Prosecutors seized 45 kilograms of cocaine and more than $1.6 million in cash, all flowing From Mexico through Texas to Memphis.

At the time, federal and state authorities promised ongoing vigilance.

Judging by Torres' arrest, Morales' organization may still be operating from jail.

Action News 5 called the cell phone number through which Velazquez allegedly set up the cocaine deal, but got nowhere.

Neighbors said Torres was merely renting the house.

"You wouldn't know it, but there's a policeman that owns the rental house there," said Pike.
