MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – The Beale Street Landing is almost finished and will open to the public very soon.
Action News 5 got a sneak peek of the layout as construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the riverfront property.
The mixers are still churning. The concrete is pouring. And Beale Street Landing is transforming into the waterfront oasis the Riverfront Development Corporation imagined.
"This is the first place Memphis has ever had where people can get to the water," said Riverfront Development Corporation President Benny Lendermon. "The sense of scale and the views from the site looking at the river are better than we expected."
The south side of the building has dual purposes.
"The local excursion boat company will be selling their tickets right there at the overhang and there will be a little gift shop over here," explained Lendermon.
Every open space will pay for itself.
"This half of the building can close off and you can imagine having an event looking out over the river so it becomes a rental space," he said.
The patio will overlook the river.
"You can put a stage on one end of it and play to the crowd. The restaurant can expand out on to the patio in nice weather," Lendermon pointed out.
The Riverside Grille on the north side of the building expands between 4,500 and 15,500 square feet.
Lendermon says Bridezillas are welcome. The elevator shaft can take a bride up to the roof of Beale Street Landing where she can make a dramatic entrance during her ceremony and walk down the aisle on the green grass rooftop.
They have just a few more finishing touches to make before the public can get a glimpse at the finished product.
"This aluminum framing holds these multi-colored metal panels that carry this sunset theme through the building and up to the top of the roof," said Lendermon.
The restaurant opening has been delayed from this July to the first of the year so it will not open right before winter.
But the landing will be open for the power boat races in October, and someone has already reserved the reception area for November.
