MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The National Civil Rights Museum will reveal plans for a historical facelift that will, among other things, allow closer access to the spot where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.
The $27 million renovation project will be the first of its kind at the Lorraine Motel building.
Construction is expected to begin this fall, and Tuesday is your chance to get a sneak peek at the final plans.
The museum will feature new exhibits, new amenities for visitors, and more public parking.
One of the biggest changes involves the famous balcony where King was shot. Now, you can only see the historical landmark through a second floor window. After the changes, you will be able to get even closer.
Officials said when construction begins in November, you will still be able to visit the Legacy Building across the street. It will remain open for tours.
A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the museum to show off the final plans for the museum.
