MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Nearly one week after the vote to keep one local school superintendent and cut ties with another, the Unified School Board could have another big vote on the table Tuesday.

The board plans to focus on the future of the Unified School District and will decide if they want to consider opening up a search for a new superintendent.

The discussion comes after the board voted last week not to renew the contract of Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash.  His contract runs out at the end of the 2012-2013 school year.

The contract of Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Aitken was allowed to run through 2015.

If the board decides not to open that search, it effectively means that Aitken will be the leader of the merged district.  If they go forward with the search, it could cost up to a million dollars.

Another item on the agenda Tuesday includes reconsidering the proposal to transfer the powers of Memphis City Schools before the merger, meaning Aitken would be given Cash's administrative authority over Memphis City Schools operations.

That motion was brought before the board by commissioner Betty Mallott last week, but sent back to committee for further review.

Tuesday's meeting is scheduled to start at the Teaching and Learning Academy on Union Avenue at 5:30 p.m.
